Antenor Auction is pleased to present a sale dedicated to Belgian modern and contemporary art, bringing together a fine selection of works from private collections.

The exhibition opens with a remarkable group of works on paper focused on the female figure, notably including two rare ink drawings by Rik Wouters. A key figure in Belgian modernism, Wouters (1882–1916) embodies a deeply innovative vision of painting at the turn of the 20th century through the freedom of his gesture, the intensity of his palette, and the vibrancy of his line.

This ensemble is enriched by a charcoal and watercolor drawing by Suzanne Valadon, whose work—both powerful and liberated from convention—offers a distinctive perspective on the representation of the body.

The section devoted to the avant-garde highlights an exceptional oil on canvas by Marthe Donas, dated 1917. Originally from Antwerp, Donas (1885–1967) established herself as a pioneering figure of abstraction. Influenced by her discovery of Cubism in Paris during the First World War, she developed as early as 1917 a strikingly modern visual language, of which the present work is a rare and early example.

An abstract composition by Pol Bury, created in 1952, subtly illustrates the transition toward new formal explorations, foreshadowing the kinetic developments that would later define his work.

Finally, an important 148 cm bronze sculpture by the Italian artist Bruno Romeda, dated 1998, brings this ensemble to a close with strength and elegance. His sculptural practice was based on rigorous forms—circles, triangles, and squares—and he also skillfully played with perspective: when placed in a garden, his works reveal new axes or frame fragments of the surrounding landscape.
