JAPAN - MEIJI ERA (1868–1912) - Lot 90
JAPAN - MEIJI ERA (1868–1912) Ivory okimono (Elephantidae spp.), depicting two peasants: one seated on a tree trunk holding his pipe and tobako-ire, the other standing and holding a peach, with a monkey seated at their feet. H: 13 x W: 11 x D: 8 cm Weight: 242 g (Restored) The okimono presented here is quite typical of the Meiji era. Demand for precious Japanese objects in the European market was very high at the time, and ivory okimono met this demand. They typically depict scenes from daily life, “small trades” and artisans, or finely carved deities and figures from Japanese folklore. CITES Certificate No. 2026/BE00190/CE will be provided to the buyer. Expert for this lot: Cabinet Portier
