Valérie Lenders (b. 1965, Brussels) is a Belgian artist whose practice moves between painting, ceramics and graphic arts. Trained at the Académie des Beaux-Arts de Bruxelles and La Cambre, since the 1990s she has been developing a body of work in which line, gesture and material become the vectors of a deeply personal language.
At the heart of her approach are four essential elements: tool, space, rhythm and state of mind.
The tool - be it brush, needle, hand shaping clay or music - determines the nature of the gesture. Space - whether canvas, paper, studio or concert hall - becomes the terrain of exploration, where the line unfolds freely. Rhythm guides the whole: repetitions, variations, breaths and tensions compose vibrant surfaces. Finally, the state of mind, an invisible but omnipresent driving force, infuses each work with an intuitive, meditative energy.
Her tracings, which she describes as "thought paths", form sensitive cartographies where the viewer is invited to circulate without fixed reference points. Her hybrid practice - painting, sewing, embroidery, weaving and ceramics - extends this search for balance between gesture, material and interiority.
Winner of a SPES Foundation grant in 2014, Valérie Lenders exhibits regularly in Belgium, France and Spain. She lives and works in Brussels and also develops part of her creation on the Île d'Yeu.
In this exhibition, so that each and every one of us can indulge our own creative wanderings, she also offers ceramic-framed mirrors, veritable reflection-surfaces inviting an intimate dialogue between self, material and gesture.
