NECKLACE OF THREE YAM KNIVES - Lot 188
NECKLACE OF THREE YAM KNIVES Necklace made of three yam knives suspended from a string of dogfish hair. Papua New Guinea H: 43 cm Plinth These knives were used to cut the umbilical cord of newborn babies and to divide yam pieces for planting. A sharp object, this knife creates a "rupture", but the rituals with which it is associated symbolize the entry into a new life, that of the newborn separated from its mother's body, or that of the piece of yam, which once planted, will be reborn. Linked to the ancestors, the yam knife symbolizes the transmission of life and knowledge between generations.
