MARIE-ADÈLAÏDE (DIT ADÈLE) KINDT (1804-1894) - Lot 136
MARIE-ADÈLAÏDE (DIT ADÈLE) KINDT (1804-1894) Marie-Adèlaïde (known as Adèle) Kindt (1804-1894) Portrait of a Young Girl Carrying a Bouquet of Violets Signed and dated 1833 Oil on canvas H: 66 x W: 63 cm A precocious talent, from an early age Adèle Kindt was destined to become one of the leading female artists of her generation. By the age of 22, she had already won first prize at the Ghent Academy. She trained with the great neoclassical master Jacques-Louis David (1748-1825), then with two of his best students, Sophie Frémiet Rude (1799-1867) and the history painter François-Joseph Navez (1787-1869), whose style had a strong influence on her. It's interesting to reflect on how she functioned in the male-dominated world of history painting, which couldn't have been the easiest environment. Her portraits were the object of great care, with precious details amplified by a gentle chiaroscuro.
