ON THE RETURN OF NAPOLEON IER FROM THE ISLAND OF ELBA, A FEW DAYS AFTER HIS ARRIVAL AT THE TUILERIES BARRAS (Paul). Autograph letter signed to the marquise of Montpezat. Les Aygalades [near Marseille], March 30, 1815 (postmark dated April 16, 1815). One p. in-folio, address on the back, small lack to the address leaf due to the opening without affecting the text, some foxing; framed under glass. " ... YOU ARE IN CONCERN IN PARIS, WE ARE NOT LESS THAN HERE, where political news has not reached us for a few days. However, we are calm, and this state is due to the civil authorities of this city. THE PASSAGES ARE CLOSED BY CORDONS OF THE NATIONAL GARDES, so that, although provided with the passports of the mayor of this commune, I have not yet [been able] to set out. It will be at the first moment without doubt. I will inform you. My health is recovering a little, and this is due to the sun of Provence. We are in Aigalades with our family, breathing the pure and serene air. WE WOULD BE HAPPY, IF THE COUNTRY WAS HAPPY. I need rest and security more than anyone else, after so many events that have tormented me for so many years. Give me, my dear friend, your news. Stay at home and receive my most tender embraces. BARRAS, THIS "KING OF THE DIRECTOIRE" WHO AIDED THE ASCENSION OF THE FUTURE EMPEROR, had to be exiled by order of this one, from 1801 to 1805 and again from 1810 to 1814. It was during this period that he acquired his castle of Aygalades. THE MARQUISE DE MONTPEZAT, COUSINE AND LAST COMPANY OF PAUL BARRAS, was described in his Memoirs as "one of the most distinguished women of our time by her moral qualities as well as by the pleasures of her spirit". A royalist emigrant who became one of the "Marvelous Women" of the Directory, she had befriended Paul Barras and, as a widow, ended up living with him in Paris during the Restoration: her daughter married the adopted son of Paul Barras, Alexandre Rousselin. Provenance : former collection of Émile Brouwet.
