FRENCH POLICE ORDER IN LOWER EGYPT - Lot 81
FRENCH POLICE ORDER IN LOWER EGYPT BONAPARTE (Napoleon). 5 signed apostilles (3 "BP" and 2 "B") as general-in-chief of the Army of the East (8 lines in the hand of his secretary Louis-Antoine Fauvelet de Bourrienne, on a half-page column) in the margin of a piece addressed to him, signed by general Charles-François-Joseph Dugua as governor of Cairo (1 p. 1/2 in-folio on a half-page column). Cairo, 5 messidor year VII [23 June 1799]. All on a copper-engraved illustrated headed sheet "Dugua, general of division"; broad darkened wetness; framed under two-sided glass. ORDERS GIVEN AS GENERAL-IN-CHIEF OF THE EASTERN ARMY TO GENERAL DUGUA, GOVERNOR OF CAIRO. - General Dugua reports: "Bartholomew has 28 horses and 40 mamlouks for which he asks for food and fodder." NAPOLEON BONAPARTE replies: "Granted after having asked for the state and passed the review..." An Italian-Greek adventurer present in Cairo before the expedition, Bartolomeo Serra had been appointed colonel and placed at the head of one of the three Mameluke corps in the service of the French, but he became famous for his exactions in police operations. He would later follow the Mameluke corps to France. - General Dugua explains: "When he toured the [province of] Charkié and the [province of] Kalioubie with Adjutant-General Roize, the latter complained about the abuses carried out in the villages by Bartholomew. C[itoye]n Geffroy had told me about it. It did not reach me. NAPOLEON BONAPARTE replies: "Ask Bartholomé for the state of it, and threaten him..." The future general César-Antoine Roize was then chief of staff of Joachim Murat. - General Dugua suggested: "Since [executions by] shooting are becoming frequent at the citadel, I propose, General, to substitute a head-chopper, which would spare our cartridges and not make such a splash." NAPOLEON BONAPARTE: answers: "Agreed". - General Dugua suggests: "The public women infest the districts. To keep them away, it is necessary to drown those who will be caught in the cazernes." NAPOLEON BONAPARTE replies: "To charge the aga..." This character was the general in chief of the Ottoman janissaries. - Finally, General Dugua reports: "The citizen Dupas complains that his garrison is too weak. The prisoners are more numerous than the men intended to guard them...". NAPOLEON BONAPARTE replies, "I will give orders accordingly..." The future general Pierre-Louis Dupas, then a colonel, commanded the citadel of Cairo. Document published for the first time by François-Alphonse Aulard in La Révolution française (Paris, Société de l'histoire de la Révolution, vol. xlv, pp. 70-71, with some errors of reading of the one who had communicated the copy to him). Provenance : former collection of Émile Brouwet.
