Provenance: Former collection Emile Brouwet. Biographies : Carlo ZUCCHI, born on March 10, 1777 in Reggio d'Émilie (Italy), died on December 19, 1863 in Reggio d'Émilie, is an Italian general of the First Empire. He was distinguished by his great bravery in battle. Officer of the Legion of Honor and Knight of the Iron Crown. He fought for the independence of Italy in 1831. To understand the relationship between the two men, we will quote Zucchi's memoirs: "Of this last officer (Berchet), I will say a few words here, as the heart dictates. A man of lively ingenuity, exquisite courtesy, and indomitable spirit, Berchet was a brave soldier on the battlefields, without pride, without vanity, disinterested, fond of glory and jealous of the honor of the Italian arms. This is why he became very dear to me. This ancient custom of affection and esteem, born in the midst of the pains and dangers of war, was later further nourished by the noble civil virtues which my good Berchet was able to demonstrate during forty-seven years." Ambroise BERCHET (born in 1784) uncle of the poet, lieutenant in the 2nd Italian line and in the guards of Marie Louise under the Empire. We have only little information on this man, who confirms in a speech in Brighton in 1831 to have been for some years the aide-de-camp of Zucchi. Knight of the Legion of Honor and of the Iron Crown.
