JAKOB SCHWEGLER (1793-1866) Bronze medallion 19th century HELVETIORUM FIDEI AC VIRTUTI.. Embedded in the rock, a lion lying down, mortally wounded, with features marked by pain, clutching a fleur-de-lys, in the hollow of one of its paws, symbol of the French monarchy; in the exergue DIE X AUGUSTI. D: 11 cm A monument was erected in Lucerne in 1821 in memory of the Swiss Guards who died in the Tuileries; the inscription in Latin reads To the loyalty and courage of the Swiss. The night of August 9 to 10, 1792, at the Tuileries Palace, was spent in constant alarm. It was expected that the revolutionaries would attack. The Swiss Guard, 900 strong, under the command of Colonel Louis-Augustin d'Affry of Fribourg was almost alone in defending the place. Shortly after 9 o'clock in the morning, thousands of demonstrators entered the great garden of the Tuileries and the Guard was massacred by the revolutionaries
