TOURNAI & TERVUEREN - Lot 66
TOURNAI & TERVUEREN Cup and saucer in soft porcelain decorated in polychrome and gold, on the cup of a couple standing in a river landscape with buildings and a rose stem, and on the saucer, a medallion surrounded by large golden rocaille foliage decorated with a couple in a landscape by the water. Decoration attributed to the painter Georg Christoph Lindemann in Tervueren. Marked with the Cross of Lorraine. 18th century H: 6 x D: 13.3 cm Gold wear The very particular and typical way of painting the trees and the entire decor allows us to attribute these porcelains to the painter Georg Christoph Lindemann. This painter, born in Dresden (1735-1780), had previously worked at Nymphenburg from 1758 to 1760, in Ludwigsburg from 1760 to 1761, in Höchst in 1762, in Paris around 1765 and then in Weesp. In June 1767, he was hired by Charles of Lorraine as a draughtsman and to run a small porcelain factory for his private use in the outbuildings of Tervueren Castle. If Lindemann tried his hand at porcelain manufacture, he mainly decorated white porcelain bought from the Tournai manufactory. The production was short-lived as the factory did not survive the death of Lindemann and Charles of Lorraine in 1780. Biblio. Dumortier (Cl.) and Habets (P.). The above information is taken from this book, for which we thank the authors very much. Note in the book, page 119 Fig.VIII-23 the reproduction of a detail of a sauceboat on which we observe the same young woman as on our cup.
