Porter (graveur) The Rht Honble George Pitt Lord Rivers, 1827 Etching in the black manner H: 49 x W: 37 cm Rousseurs Remarkable portrait by Agasse of his patron George Pitt, second baron Rivers, with his two greyhounds. Jacques Laurent Agasse, a famous animal and landscape painter, worked in London in the early 19th century. He was born in Geneva and received his first artistic training there. In 1800, he moved to London at the invitation of his boss, Hon. George Pitt. While in London, he painted a number of fine equestrian and greyhound portraits for Pitt, including this portrait, which is considered one of his most successful paintings. His dedication to the study of anatomy and his meticulous painting style earned him enormous success in England, being widely recognized as one of the most skilled animal painters of his time. A regular exhibitor at the Royal Academy between 1801 and 1845, this distinguished portrait is a wonderful example of his skilled painting and meticulous anatomical observation.
